Young Woman Receives a 3D Printed Skull

A 22 year-old woman in the Netherlands had a condition that thickened her skull. She suffered from severe headaches, vision loss, and motor imbalance. Other vital brain functions were also projected to be impacted. A remarkable surgery was done which replaced her skull with a perfect fit, 3D printed, plastic skull manufactured by Anatomics, an Australian medical device company. Now, she has no more headaches, had her vision restored, and is back at work. Really cool.

Foldscope, The 50 Cent Microscope

A Stanford bioengineer develops a fully functional, ultra low-cost paper microscope. Wow.

From Scopeblog:
When Manu Prakash, PhD, wants to impress lab visitors with the durability of his Origami-based paper microscope, he throws it off a three-story balcony, stomps on it with his foot and dunks it into a water-filled beaker. Miraculously, it still works.
Even more amazing is that this microscope -- a bookmark-sized piece of layered cardstock with a micro-lens -- only costs about 50 cents in materials to make.

Marvellous: A Village For People With Dementia

(image from Hans Erkelens/CC)

In the Netherlands, there is a village that is specially designed for people with dementia. It's a village where people can shop, dine, tend gardens, walk safely, live almost normally! It's a self-contained, secured world, but I guess, a lot happier than any other institution for people with dementia.

I want something like this in my hometown. When my mama had an embolic stroke that caused memory gaps, her world became smaller. I wish she could experience something like this, again.

Apparently, Memories Are Stored Not Just In Your Brain

There are reports that heart transplant recipients are inheriting the memories and personality of their donors. While some scientists are skeptical and dismiss this phenomenon as post-surgery stress or effect of anti-organ rejection drugs, there are also experts who believe that the organ donor's memories and emotions or cellular memories are transplanted to the recipient.
